BTS's Jin has revealed the story behind his military enlistment delay in a recent live broadcast. On October 28, Jin did a live broadcast on Weverse where he talked about his new solo single 'The Astronaut'. He is currently in Argentina for a performance at a Coldplay concert. During the broadcast, Jin stated that within a few days of returning to Korea from Argentina, he would likely be writing documents for his upcoming military enlistment.
As is known, earlier this month, Big Hit Music shared an official statement that the BTS members were preparing to fulfill their mandatory military duties. Regarding the various changes that took place prior to this announcement, Jin shared, “I originally planned to enlist in June but to be polite to fans, I waited until our October performance [in Busan].”
“I don't want a tearful performance that the [enlistment] announcement is delayed,” he added, and as he mentioned, BTS's official announcement came two days after the Busan concert on October 15. Jin added that after 'Dynamite' was even more successful than they imagined, BTS thought that it would be best to release 'Butter' and 'Permission to Dance' for fans.
He shared, “Because both songs did well, I honestly think it's true that I didn't leave during that time.” After promotions for 'Permission to Dance' ended, the group decided that they would at least hold a concert before enlisting, but were later scheduled for the Grammy Awards. After the Grammys was when Jin shared that he was starting his military preparations.
He explained, “I don't like cold weather so I got an 'okay' from the agency to go [enlist] in the summer between May and June.” “In June, we released a video about stopping group [promotions] and focusing on solo [activity]. We indirectly shared that we were going to the military," he added.
However, there is one more change to Jin's plans: the BTS World Expo 2030 Busan Korea concert. As he mentioned earlier, Jin shared that he wants to enlist in spring or summer, or fall at the latest. Despite his wishes and plans, BTS's concert is scheduled for October and seems to be the group's last chance to perform together before enlisting in the military.
Jin continued, “I thought a lot about whether to be polite to fans and go to the military in cold weather, or not perform and leave during warm weather which I like.” In the end, Jin chose to prioritize fans. On why he decided to announce his mandatory military service after the concert, Jin shared, “I don't want fans to watch our performance while sad because we said it would be our last.”
