Paramount Pictures recently released the first trailer for the animated film Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This film is the third installment of the franchise based on the SEGA video game, where Sonic, the blue hedgehog, is back in action.
This time, he teams up with his friends—Knuckles, Tails, Tom, and Maddie—to face a new threat from Shadow the Hedgehog. Despite hinting at his retirement from acting, Jim Carrey is confirmed to reprise his role as Sonic's arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik.
The film reportedly also includes the origin story of Shadow, including his relationship with Maria Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik's granddaughter, who was the reason Shadow was created in the hope of curing his illness.
Maria's death at the hands of the Guardian Units of Nations left Shadow with a trauma that eventually shaped him into an antihero. In addition to the main story, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer also neatly includes various elements from the game that are synonymous with Shadow.
From scenes where this black hedgehog rides a motorcycle, runs in a skating-like style, to his teleportation abilities, director Jeff Fowler and the writing team—Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington—managed to keep the character's originality true to the original version.
Keanu Reeves' voice in the trailer fits perfectly with the character of Shadow who is known to have a cool and mysterious attitude. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer also reveals that Jim Carrey will not only play Robotnik with an appearance that is more in line with the game version , but will also play his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
Other Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cast members include James Marsden (Jury Duty), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Sofia Pernas (Tracker), Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso), James Wolk (Mad Men), Jorma Taccone (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), and Alyla Browne (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga).
The Sonic film franchise has proven to be a huge box office success. The first film, released in February 2020, was followed by a sequel in April 2022, and has grossed a global total of around $724 million. Just like the previous two films, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is also directed by Jeff Fowler and is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024.
