The production plans for the live-action Tangled film have been postponed indefinitely. The change in plans came after the live-action adaptation of Disney 's animated film, Snow White, received low sales.

Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday April 7, 2025 that the film Snow White failed to shoot up the box office rankings in the first two weeks of its release. The film reportedly managed to spend a production budget of US$270 million, which also makes it the highest of all live-action remakes from the major studio.

Part of the budget is allegedly due to delays due to the writers' and actors' strike in 2023. So far, the Snow White film has grossed around US$145 million at the global box office, with domestic ticket sales only around US$70 million.

Not only the box office, Snow White (2025) also received a score of 40 percent from 244 film critic reviews, as well as a rating of 1.6/10 on the IMDb website. Looking back at the previous live-action film, Mufasa: The Lion King only grossed US$35 million domestically upon its release in December 2024, or about $7 million less than Snow White, which only grossed US$42 million in the United States.

However, Mufasa still managed to surpass the US$700 million mark worldwide. So Snow White has a great chance to close its screening with a much higher profit than expected, even though the film has to compete with a number of other family genre films, such as A Minecraft Movie, this weekend.

Changes are also likely to occur because Disney is still regularly showing live-action, such as Lilo & Stitch this year and Moana which is planned to be released in 2026. The news of the delay of the live-action Tangled production also comes after almost four months since the news of its production was first announced in December 2024.

The project even involved Michael Gracey as a director. He was previously known for the films The Greatest Showman and Better Man. Meanwhile, the screenwriter's chair is filled by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who has contributed to the films Do Revenge and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Now, the future of the film is uncertain as Tangled could undergo creative changes if it does go ahead. The original Tangled starred Mandy Moore as the golden-haired princess from folklore and Zachary Levi as the spunky Flynn Rider.

Tangled was Disney's first attempt to remake the tried-and-tested princess musical formula using 3D computer animation and was a huge hit, grossing an estimated $600 million at the global box office.

After a sluggish 2000s, Tangled will kick off a very successful 2010s run of computer-animated films for the Mouse House, which is known for being the home of major animated films like Zootopia and Frozen.

Disney's next live-action animated film will likely face some challenges in the coming months as the Lilo & Stitch remake hits theaters on Memorial Day weekend. Disney remakes of The Lion King (2019), Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Aladdin (2019) have grossed over $1 billion worldwide, taking their stories from the 1990s.

However, Disney's oldest adaptations, Dumbo (2019) and The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010), which is set in the 1940s, are among the studio's lowest-grossing remakes, earning $350 million for Dumbo and $215 million for Sorcerer's Apprentice.
