Jang Keun Suk has been on hiatus from the South Korean entertainment world for quite some time. Two years ago, he was open about being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and then decided to take a break. The Bait (2023) was his last project on the small screen.
Now the actor born on August 4, 1987 has recovered from cancer. He told how his life changed completely after the diagnosis. "Since fighting cancer, I started to take better care of myself. The pain made me stronger," said Jang Keun Suk on MBN's variety show Let's GO which aired last weekend.
The thyroid cancer suffered by the Bel Ami (2013) actor was discovered when it was still in the early stages. According to a report from Korea University Medicine reported by Korea JoongAng Daily on Wednesday April 23, 2025, at this stage the cancer is easy to remove and is almost 100 percent clean after surgery.
Although since the beginning of his diagnosis he was told that his cancer was not too threatening, Jang Keun Suk was still worried. He needed time to truly accept his condition at that time. "They said my thyroid cancer was a 'good cancer', but there was a scary feeling every time I heard the word 'cancer'.
It took me a while to accept my situation. I kept it a secret from my family for a week," he continued. Jang Keun Suk underwent surgery to remove cancer cells in May 2024. He first revealed about his cancer in August 2024 after the diagnosis came out in October 2023.
The surgery was performed at Hanyang University Hospital. He is known to be an alumnus of the university. After the surgery, he donated 1.2 billion Won to the hospital. It is not yet known when Jang Keun Suk will return to the screen to greet fans.
However, he is enjoying his break by doing charity and philanthropy activities. The actor is also currently learning about real estate, Bitcoin, and stocks. Jang Keun Suk began his career in South Korean entertainment as a model before making his acting debut in the sitcom Selling Happiness (1997).
His name began to become popular after starring in Where the Truth Lies (2009) which brought him out as the winner of Most Popular Actor at the 2010 Baeksang Arts Awards. He has also appeared as the main character in popular Korean dramas such as Beethoven Virus (2008), You're Beautiful (2010), Marry Me Mary! (2010), and Love Rain (2012).
