BTS's Jimin has set a personal record for his solo work. He has now officially received Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). This marks Jimin's first Platinum certification as a solo artist from the RIAJ.
He earned the certification for the streaming success of the song "Who," released two years ago. Since 2020, the RIAJ has implemented a new certification system for streaming music in Japan. This certification complements the existing system for physical album shipments and digital downloads.
Under the new system, which has been running for 6 years, there are three certification thresholds: silver (30 million streams), gold (50 million streams), and platinum (100 million streams). The number of streams in the calculation only comes from music listeners in Japan!
This September, the song "Who" officially surpassed 100 million streams in Japan, adding to the list of certifications received by K-Pop artists this month, announced by the RIAJ last week. While "Who" is Jimin's first solo song to go Platinum in streaming, it's not his first RIAJ certification.
His 2023 solo debut album, "FACE," also achieved Platinum certification. The RIAJ certification calculations for Platinum albums and streaming are different. Album certification is calculated based on physical album shipments per tier, ranging from 100,000 (Gold), 250,000 (Platinum), and 1 million (Million).
