K-pop producer and founder of JYP Entertainment, Park Jin Young , will collaborate with KBS to present a survival show as a talent search event to find potential new idols. Quoting from Soompi on May 14, 2024, KBS2 announced the launch of a new audition variety show entitled ' The Entertainer ' led by Park Jin Young and KBS.
'The Entertainer' aims to find all-kill entertainers or versatile entertainers who are skilled in singing, dancing, acting, as well as entertaining skills in variety shows. Park Jin Young will lead the worldwide public auditions, where the top winner will get an exclusive contract for a global debut under his guidance.
With KBS's extensive network spread across various domestic and international branches, global auditions are scheduled to take place in Seoul, Busan, and Gwangju, as well as in the United States, Japan, and Vietnam. Survival shows have become very common, and many agencies seem to use this opportunity to see a trainee's popularity before debut.
Although 'Produce 101' is considered a survival show, there are many types, including those held by agencies internally. JYP Entertainment itself has been involved in several survival shows, such as Sixteen, which formed TWICE, and Stray Kids, which documented their journey to debut as a group.
Last year, Park Jin Young was also directly involved in a collaboration between the company and Republic Records entitled A2K (America 2 Korea). The survival show attempted to produce an American girl group under the K-Pop system, which resulted in VCHA's debut. Meanwhile, the announcement regarding 'The Entertainer' received mixed reactions from netizens.
On the positive side, many people appreciate the requirements listed, because there are no citizenship restrictions and the age range ranges from 15 to 31 years. On the other hand, many netizens questioned the opening of another survival program while accusing the agency of mismanaging their current group.
Some discussed contestants on LOUD, another survival show, who have not debuted in the three years since the show ended, while others reflected on the limited opportunities to meet in person for those outside of Asia and the Americas. Meanwhile, 'The Entertainer' has officially opened registration for participants and is scheduled to air in the second half of this year.
