Detention is a Taiwanese horror film directed by John Hsu which is adapted from the popular video game. A number of actors including Gingle Wang, Ching-Hua Tseng, Meng-Po Fu, and Cecilia Choi also star in this film.

The story is set during the White Terror of 1962 in Taiwan, at which time the government was very harsh on anyone who was considered a threat to its regime. One of the rules stipulated is that it is prohibited to read or distribute certain books that are deemed to contain ideologies that conflict with the government.

In this film, we are introduced to a figure named Wei Chung Ting, a Greenwood High School student who joins a secret book club. His activities included reading a number of banned books in the school building. One day, the club's activities were discovered by the authorities.

Wei and other members were then arrested and tortured in order to leak information regarding the club. After being severely tortured, Wei, who was dying, suddenly woke up in the dark and scary Greenwood High School building. Wei meets a girl named Fang Ray Shin, a student who admits she doesn't remember how she came to be at the school.

When they wanted to leave that place, the bridge leading outside the school collapsed into a very fast-flowing river. They then decided to look for their teacher, Mr. Chang Ming Hui, who Ray said was hanging around the school building.

During their search, they saw a scary ghost who looked like a military officer carrying a lantern. Apparently, the school has turned into a place filled with evil spirits. While Wei was walking around, he came across another book club member who was burning notes and banned books.

The book club members told Wei that someone had betrayed them before he was attacked by the lantern ghost. As they try to find out what happened and how to get out of this tense situation, they must also uncover the dark secrets hidden behind the White Terror.

With a series of flashbacks, we see the conflicts and relationships between the main characters, as well as how their pasts influence the situations they face in the present. Are you curious about the full story? You can watch the Detention film on the HBO GO streaming platform.
