Giving fans a surprise in the summer, Peniel from boy group BTOB finally released a single album titled Story of my L:ife. According to Allkpop, the album, which was released on June 19, 2024, consists of two songs, namely 'MIoBI' (short for 'Make It or Break It') which is also the title song, and 'Come Home'.
This single album is the solo work of the American-born man after last releasing 'Flip' in collaboration with Beenzino in 2019. 'MIoBI' is highly anticipated by Melody (BTOB fans). After more than 10 years of career in Kpop music since debuting in 2012, Peniel Shin has always been known as a rapper.
As a result, music fans are used to hearing his low baritone voice when he raps . Even so, Peniel bravely challenges himself to sing the full song from the beginning to the end. Not only fans, even other BTOB members were also surprised by Peniel's voice!
BTOB's agency uploaded a video on their Youtube page showing Eunkwang, Hyunsik, and Minhyuk's reactions when they first heard the song. 'Make It or Break It' is a punk rock song with a strong accompaniment of traditional band instrumentals such as electric guitar, drums, and bass guitar.
There are also various vocal layers in the background that use distortion and auto-tune effects . These diverse sounds can be heard mainly in the lyrics You got me walking upside down in the verse. Not only surprised by his singing voice, Melody can also hear Peniel using his voice to challenge the higher octave range in the chorus .
If you listen carefully, there is a vocal progression from Peniel's normal low voice to increasingly high as it goes to the chorus . The peak is the addictive part that also includes falsetto in the You-whoah, oh-whoah section.
So go take it higher (higher), Burn like fire (fire), Got to believe, make it or break it, Go believe, make it or break it, yeah, You, whoa, oh-whoa, I'm feeling like I woke up in a getaway. Once entering the bridge, the sentiment of the song suddenly changes to a darker one with the disappearance of the drum beat. This section is similar to the bridges of typical 2000s bands such as Simple Plan and Greenday.
However, Peniel is able to balance this short bridge and bring the tempo of the song back to an up-beat to enter the final chorus. Overall, 'MIoBI' is a summer song with stable dynamics and is suitable to listen to when on vacation to relieve fatigue. Peniel's light and rock -like vocal color also makes this song easy to like, especially for fans who tend to listen to songs from traditional bands.
Meanwhile, according to news from Pinkvilla , BTOB reportedly failed to perform in Jakarta due to a misunderstanding with the promoter agency that planned to bring them to Indonesia. What do you think about this new release from Peniel? Continued success for Peniel, and hopefully someday BTOB will have the chance to greet Melody Indonesia!
