There's an exciting update on the long-awaited Highlander reboot. Henry Cavill is confirmed to play the lead character in the film , which is scheduled to begin production in early 2025. Chad Stahelski, the director behind the successful John Wick series, will direct the latest version of Highlander.
In an interview with Collider , Chad Stahelski revealed that filming will begin in January 2025 in Scotland. " We started shooting in January in Scotland. That's why I left right after I finished here. I left for Scotland on Monday for the final location check ," said Chad Stahelski, quoted on Monday July 1, 2024.
Chad Stahelski also revealed that the project will have significant differences compared to the John Wick films , especially in terms of shifting focus from gunfights to swordfights. This director realized that shooting scenes with swords would be a big challenge, especially in terms of the safety of the actors and crew on the set.
" I think the sword fight scene was one of the hardest things to do. If I made a mistake with the gun, the flash of the barrel could be edited out digitally, so we didn't have to worry about hurting anyone. When we were shooting the car scenes, that was also a big concern, " Chad Stahelski said.
He added, " But now there are ways of using cables that reduce the risk to the actors... The swords are a little bit more complicated because now I have to trust that the actors can swing these pieces of metal at each other without hurting their eyes or stabbing someone. " " In every movie with a sword scene, there's bound to be someone getting hit or struck in the head or something.
It requires more skill and dedication. So, that's always a major concern for me ," he concluded. Chad Stahelski admitted that he was worried that the long sword fight scenes would only bore the audience. For him, there needs to be a proper balance between the sword fight scenes and other aspects of the film's production.
He considered how to balance swordfight scenes with gunplay, martial arts, and car chases, and how to bring all of these elements together in a cohesive and compelling storyline to package. As of now, the Highlander reboot has not announced a release date, but it is projected to air in 2026.
