Marvel Studios made a big splash by announcing that one of their main actors would be coming out of retirement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The actor will play a role in two upcoming Avengers films.

Quoting The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday July 28, 2024, Robert Downey Jr. will return to play in the MCU film franchise , but this time not as Iron Man. He will play Doctor Doom, a villain character from the Fantastic Four. Joe Russo previously said that to bring the character of Doctor Doom to the big screen, they relied on the best actors in the world.

This is because Doctor Doom is one of the most complex and entertaining characters in the world of fiction. In the middle of San Diego Comic-Con, a man wearing a green suit and a mask stepped onto the stage. He slowly removed his mask to reveal Robert Downey Jr.

The first film he will star in is titled Avengers: Doomsday which is scheduled for release in May 2026, and the second film is titled Avengers: Secret Wars which will air in May 2027. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that the two films were directed by the Russo brothers, who previously successfully directed several other Avengers films.

As we know, Robert Downey Jr. became one of the biggest movie stars in the world after starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with his role as Iron Man in the film released in 2008. Through the character, Robert Downey Jr. helped the MCU become the highest-grossing film franchise of all time.

Robert himself received a huge paycheck of $50 million. He decided to retire from his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man after the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame , where his character was depicted dying to save the universe. Since then, Marvel has faced a major challenge in finding a protagonist who could fill the big shoes left by the actor born in April 1965.

The news of Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU comeback coincides with the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine , which set a new record for its opening weekend. It also became the highest-opening R-rated film of all time.
