South Korean hit series Squid Game has just released the first trailer for its second season, which is scheduled to air in December 2024. The sequel is confirmed to be released on Netflix on December 26, 2024, marking the second season which will arrive three years after the previous season aired in 2021.
The announcement of the broadcast schedule was accompanied by news that Squid Game will end in season 3 and is ready to be released in 2025. "The real game begins. Squid Game Season 2 will be here on December 26. The final season will be here in 2025," wrote Netflix via X (or Twitter) on Wednesday August 1, 2024.
Netflix also showed the first teaser for Squid Game 2 which shows the participants preparing to play the life-threatening game. They appear to be preparing to run in a stadium wearing Squid Game's legendary green jackets. Some of them were seen falling which also indicated that the participants failed and were killed on the spot.
The teaser ends with Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) watching the game standing near the running track. Squid Game 2 is set to feature Lee Jung-jae as the main character. Several actors from the first season are also confirmed to appear, such as Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-hun, and Wi Ha-joon.
The series previously released a number of names of new actors who will join the second season, including Park Gyu-young, Choi Seung-hyun or TOP, Lee Jin-wook, Jo Yuri, Won Ji-an, and Kang Ae-sim. There are also Im Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Kang Ha-neul, and Yang Dong-geun who were announced earlier.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk also returned as executive producer for all episodes of season 2. He even won an Emmy Award for the success of Squid Game's first season. Squid Game 2 is said to have cost up to 100 billion won to produce.
The series reportedly began filming in the summer after going through the actor casting process. Netflix first released the first season of Squid Game in 2021. The series produced by Hwang Dong-hyuk tells the story of 456 people who have to compete to win 45.6 billion won by taking part in a number of traditional games.
