Shocking news came from one of the members of the girl group Red Velvet, Joy. The idol is rumored to not be extending her contract with SM Entertainment and will leave the agency after her exclusive contract officially ends.
Quoting from Allkpop on Saturday September 21, 2024, the news outlet Star News reported that Red Velvet's Joy is currently looking for a new agency. The idol born in 1996 has also reportedly held a meeting with an agency engaged in acting.
This news certainly further strengthens the fact that Joy will soon leave SM Entertainment, the agency that made her name big. Meanwhile, Red Velvet members debuted at different times, so they have different contract renewal periods. SM Entertainment even delayed their official announcement regarding Red Velvet's exclusive contract.
Although Red Velvet was supposed to end their 7-year contract with SM Entertainment in 2021. It was only in August 2023 that SM Entertainment announced that member Seulgi had decided to extend her contract. This is the first time SM Entertainment has officially discussed Red Velvet's contract.
Following Seulgi, member Irene was also reported to have extended her contract with SM Entertainment in February. The remaining members Wendy, Joy, and Yeri have yet to have their contract status announced by the agency.
On the other hand, Joy often expressed her frustration towards SM regarding the promotion issue for Red Velvet's latest album comeback titled 'Cosmic' last June 2024. Joy did not hesitate to say that the agency did not listen to complaints and suggestions from the members for their latest album.
"They (SM Entertainment) never listened to our requests," Joy said about her frustration with Red Velvet's latest comeback album promotions. Not only Joy who is upset with her agency, fans are also upset with SM Entertainment in promoting Red Velvet.
SM is considered not pushing Red Velvet enough and only doing minimal promotions every time they make a comeback. In other news, Red Velvet will greet fans through their 2024 fan-con tour titled 'Happiness: My Dear, ReVe1uv' in Macau on September 28, 2024.
