Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu passed away after experiencing complications from the flu that led to pneumonia during her vacation in Japan, on Monday, February 3, 2025. She died at the age of 48.

Quoting from Dimsum Daily, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Barbie Hsu experienced flu symptoms while enjoying the Chinese New Year celebrations on January 29, 2025. She was then taken to the hospital twice, but her condition deteriorated rapidly.

The Shancai actress in Meteor Garden later died of complications from influenza, which had developed into pneumonia, in a Tokyo hospital. Barbie Hsu's death has brought the flu case in Japan into the spotlight. Flu cases in Japan are currently soaring and reached a record high in December 2024.

This condition has even caused local pharmacies and hospitals to experience a shortage of flu medication. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases of Japan estimates that from September 2, 2024 to January 26, 2025, there will be around 9.523 million cases of flu.

The last week of December 2024 will be the peak of weekly flu cases in Japan. Some 317,812 cases have been reported, surpassing the government's warning threshold and the highest number since Japan began recording flu cases in 1999.

To combat the outbreak, local health officials have urged residents to take precautions, such as wearing masks or washing hands properly. In addition to the flu, Japan is also struggling with a spike in bird flu outbreaks, which led to the culling of around 5 million birds in five Japanese prefectures in January 2025.
