SHINee's Key was a guest star on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block" on February 12, 2025. On that occasion, the idol born in 1991 expressed his deep longing for the late Jonghyun. The latest episode of “You Quiz on the Block” shows Key appearing with his mother, Kim Sun Hee.
The idol’s mother recently retired after 37 years as a nurse and she shared her heartwarming story about raising her only son, Key. Sun Hee honestly expressed her feelings while watching her son debut with SHINee.
She admitted that her voice supporting Key was often the quietest, which made her heart ache, and she was worried that her son would get hurt. Key also shared the difficulties he felt when he joined SHINee. "The group was going well, but I felt like I had no presence and a lack of belonging.
It was really hard in my early twenties," he said. However, Key admitted that after working hard at his own place, good things started to happen. The idol trained as a trainee for 3 years starting in 2005 and has been in the entertainment industry for almost 20 years since his debut in 2008.
Key then touched on Jonghyun, one of the people he considered family because he spent a long time together. However, Jonghyun died at the age of 27 on December 18, 2017, allegedly due to suicide. Key recalled the time after Jonghyun's death when he wanted to leave SHINee.
"I was really shaken. I thought, 'What is the meaning of life? Should I stop doing everything?'" the idol said. Key continued, "I was quite devastated, but we decided to hold the concert at the Tokyo Dome to gather and support each other."
The idol then explained the reason for holding the concert in Japan during the difficult time. Key said, "I felt it would be hard if we didn't have a place to honor him together. We wanted to send him off in a way that celebrates his vibrant youth, even though it was short."
At the concert, the four SHINee members left their places on stage for Jonghyun, performing while holding back their sadness, which deeply touched the hearts of fans. Key shared, "Every year when his birthday or the anniversary of his death comes around, I miss him so much.
When new songs come out that we couldn't record together, I think, 'He would have done really well.'" Lastly, Key revealed, "While practicing, Jonghyun often appeared in my dreams. During concert meetings, it felt like he was just sitting next to us. We were always together... because there were always five of us."
