The Smashing Machine has n't even been released yet, but Dwayne Johnson has already secured another A24 film project that is no less interesting. This time, the actor nicknamed The Rock will appear in a psychological thriller genre film where he plays the role of a motivator.
Adapting a report from Deadline on Friday May 23, 2025, Dwayne Johnson is working again with A24 in a film entitled Breakthrough. Set in Southern California near the turn of the millennium, the film follows a young man who has lost his way in life and is influenced by a charismatic motivational speaker.
However, it turns out that behind the charm of the motivator, there are hidden ethically dubious methods, even a dark side that has not been revealed. Dwayne Johnson is reportedly set to play the motivator in a supporting role, while casting for the lead and other characters is still ongoing.
Dwayne Johnson is also producing the film alongside Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. Stacy Sher of Shiny Penny Productions is also producing. Meanwhile, Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf are also on board as executive producers from Lighthouse Management and Media.
Breakthrough itself was written by young writer Zeke Goodman, but until now no director has been officially appointed to direct this film. Zeke Goodman is a versatile writer, director, and actor who began his career starring in the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Amazon's reboot of the Cruel Intentions series.
After Black Adam failed to start a new action franchise, Dwayne Johnson has started trying his luck with more varied projects. Breakthrough is one of the films that will show the audience a new side of him. Previously, Dwayne Johnson had already joined The Smashing Machine.
The Smashing Machine is a biopic sports drama film that tells the life story of Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr, a former wrestler, UFC champion, and MMA fighter. Although it is not yet known what part of Kerr's life will be shown in the film, the fighter's life is indeed full of interesting stories both in and out of the ring.
Outside the ring, Kerr slowly became addicted to painkillers and other narcotics to cope with the various injuries he sustained. The substance abuse problem nearly caused his then-girlfriend, Dawn, to leave him. Kerr eventually decided to check into a rehab center.
Meanwhile, in the ring, Kerr is known as a ferocious fighter who introduced ground and pound techniques to the UFC and MMA world. Kerr's journey with addiction, injury, and her relationship with Dawn will likely be a major focus in The Smashing Machine.
In addition, Dwayne Johnson also took part in Martin Scorsese's latest film which is said to be a combination of Goodfellas and The Departed. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The actor even called this the most inspiring time in his illustrious career.
So, it's safe to say that Dwayne Johnson is opening a new, colorful chapter in his acting world. Meanwhile, last year Dwayne Johnson made his comeback in the holiday-themed film, Red One.
He played Callum Drift, the North Pole security boss. He is forced to team up with Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans), an eccentric mercenary who is skeptical about Christmas miracles. Their mission is to find and save Santa Claus (JK Simmons) before it's time to give out presents.
