For a singer, the vocal cords are not just an organ, but a major asset. So it is no wonder that Miley Cyrus is so careful when she finds a serious problem with her vocal cords. The 'Flowers' singer revealed that she has quite large polyps on her vocal cords, as well as Reinke's Edema, which is swelling of the vocal cords due to fluid buildup.
Both of these conditions make it difficult for her to perform live, but Miley is not willing to undergo surgery to remove her polyps. Speaking on The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1, the 32-year-old explained that her distinctive hoarse voice was actually formed from this condition
"I had Reinke's Edema, which is what's called vocal cord abuse. And when I was 21, I was staying up late, drinking, smoking and partying after every gig. It definitely didn't help," she said. "But, in my case, all of that is not the main cause. My voice has always been like this," she continued.
Miley added that, in addition to edema, large polyps that were lodged in her vocal cords also shaped the color and texture of her vocals. "The polyps actually contributed a lot to making my voice sound the way it does now - unique and full of character.
But performing with them was like running a marathon with weights on my ankles," she said. Even when tired, speaking can be a challenge. "Sometimes at night I call my mom, she says, 'You sound like you're talking on the radio.' That's a sign that I'm really tired," added the ex-wife of actor Liam Hemsworth.
Although surgery could be a medical solution, Miley admitted that she is very worried about losing her signature voice. "I don't want to risk having surgery and waking up and not sounding like myself. That's a possibility, and that's very concerning," she said.
Not only vocal cord problems, the star also recalled another medical experience that she called quite traumatic. While preparing for the special New Year's Eve Party with legendary singer Dolly Parton in 2023, her ovarian cyst ruptured. Despite being in excruciating pain, she still performed on stage.
"I had a pretty serious medical incident at the time. A cyst on my ovary ruptured. We didn't know exactly what happened at the time, but the show went on," she recalled. "It was a traumatic experience, because it was so painful, but I kept going. Even though it was really hard for me."
