Elle Fanning has officially been cast in The Hunger Games : Sunrise on the Reaping as Effie Trinket. She was confirmed to join the project after it was announced via the official accounts of The Hunger Games franchise on social media.
The franchise initially announced other big names joining Sunrise on the Reaping, including Jesse Plemons, Maya Hawke, and Ralph Fiennes. "Elle Fanning is Effie Trinket," said @TheHungerGames in an announcement video uploaded on Tuesday May 20, 2025.
Elle Fanning will also star as a younger version of Effie Trinket in the prequel. The iconic character was originally played by Elizabeth Banks. Banks played Effie in the first four films of The Hunger Games, where she was tasked with accompanying District 12 tributes to compete in the Games.
The assignment brings Effie together with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). She then carries out a number of tasks before they escort Katniss and Peeta to the Capitol.
On the other hand, Effie from Sunrise on the Reaping was chosen to be the stylist for Haymitch Abernathy who was a District 12 participant in the 50th Hunger Games. The actress was cast as the character Effie in Sunrise on the Reaping after speculations about her appearance continued to be discussed among netizens.
Fans of the Hunger Games franchise are also banking on the A Complete Unknown star to play the younger version of Effie. This is because fans believe Elle Fanning's profile is very similar to Effie and can continue Elizabeth Banks' footsteps.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Erin Westerman also agreed that Elle Fanning was chosen because of her resemblance to the character of Effie. On the other hand, she also felt very honored that the studio could fulfill the fans' expectations by casting the actress to play Effie Trinket.
"Elle Fanning's career has skyrocketed. She has a rare aura--warm, sparkling, and with incredible depth," Westerman said. "She's been an undeniable fan favorite from the start, and we were honored to have her answer our call," she continued, as reported by Variety.
