Actress Cate Blanchett unexpectedly appeared as a cameo in the final episode of Squid Game Season 3. Her appearance sparked speculation that a new spin-off would be coming. The Oscar-winning actress appeared in the final moments of Squid Game Season 3's episode 6.

In the clip, Cate Blanchett is wearing a suit, her hair pulled back and playing ddakji with a man on a Los Angeles street corner. Cate Blanchett, 56, plays a recruiter in the American version of Squid Game, recruiting people in financial trouble to join the deadly game.

Squid Game series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who wrote and directed all episodes, shared his thoughts on Cate Blanchett's cameo appearance in an interview with Netflix's Tudum. "And why Cate Blanchett?

Because she's the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn't like her? So we're very happy to have her," said Hwang Dong-hyuk as the director of "Squid Game", as quoted in the Netflix broadcast on Saturday June 28, 2025.

"We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just a word or two—and that's what he does," he added. Hwang Dong-hyuk also admitted to being impressed with Cate Blanchett's acting, even though her appearance in the series was short.

According to him, Blanchett still managed to leave a strong impression through her performance. "He was great at ddakji. I'm sure he nailed the ddakji on his first try, and we were able to get that one long take perfect," he said.
