Former K-pop group Wanna One member Yoon Jisung will star in the new Korean drama, 'Thundercloud Rainstorm'. The news immediately sparked controversy among fans because the original webtoon featured LGBT themes.
As reported by EDaily on Tuesday July 5, 2025, Yoon Jisung has been offered a starring role in the Korean drama Thundercloud Rainstorm, an adaptation of the popular webtoon in the Boys' Love (BL) genre. In this drama, Yoon Jisung plays the main character and is described as a gay man.
The Korean drama Thundercloud Rainstorm follows Yoon Jisung as Lee Iljo, a man without a job, savings, or clear direction in life. After years of not speaking to his cousin Seo Jeonghan, Lee Iljo reunites with him at their uncle's funeral. Sympathizing with his plight, Seo Jeonghan offers to live with Lee Iljo.
This casting decision wasn't entirely well-received. Many readers of the original Thundercloud Rainstorm webtoon had high expectations for the adaptation and considered Yoon Jisung unsuitable for the role of Lee Iljo. Furthermore, Yoon Jisung was portrayed as the more passive participant in the relationship.
Meanwhile, Yoon Jisung's fans, especially Wannables (the nickname for the K-Pop group Wanna One), felt uncomfortable imagining him in intimate scenes with fellow actors. They also didn't expect Yoon Jisung to accept the offer to star in a BL drama. "Jisungaa why does it have to be BL" commented a fan on social media.
"Oh, bro, Jisung, why does it have to be that genre? Even though I'm happy that you're making a drama comeback. But whyaaa. Whyaaaa. Ah andwaeeeeeeee" exclaimed another shocked fan. "As a Wannable, sorry, skip this first" wrote another fan.
Despite receiving criticism, the filming process for the Korean drama Thundercloud Rainstorm is reportedly already underway and is scheduled to air at the end of 2025. The producers are also discussing releasing the Korean drama Thundercloud Rainstorm on a global streaming platform.
Yoon Jisung made his acting debut in 2021 in the Korean drama "Let Me Be Your Knight." He played Kim Yoo Chan, the drummer and vocalist of the fictional band LUNA. Thundercloud Rainstorm marks Yoon Jisung's screen comeback in four years.
