Gangnam Style singer PSY has been under scrutiny after being investigated for allegedly illegally purchasing psychotropic drugs. PSY reportedly asked others, including his manager, to pick up prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox from a university hospital without consulting him directly.

According to an exclusive report by OSEN on Wednesday August 27, 2025, the Seodaemun Police Station detained PSY along with a professor from the university hospital involved.

Police believe the action violates the Medical Services Act, as since 2021, such drug administration has been restricted to patients, their families, and caregivers. A search was conducted at the hospital, and medical records revealed that PSY had been using his manager's services to obtain prescriptions for the drug since 2022.

Xanax and Stilnox are commonly used to treat anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. However, both psychotropic medications also carry a high risk of dependence and addiction.

Therefore, their use in South Korea requires supervision and direct consultation with a doctor. In PSY's case, even though his manager did not receive a prescription as an authorized intermediary, he still took Xanax and Stilnox on his behalf, and strengthened the suspicion of legal violations.

Following the controversy that caused a public outcry, PSY, through his agency P NATION, issued an official apology in a statement. The singer, whose real name is Park Jae Sang, acknowledged negligence over the past three years.

P NATION representative also explained that PSY was diagnosed with a chronic sleep disorder. The father of two was taking Xanax and Stilnox as prescribed by his medical team."

Asking a third party (PSY's manager) to take prescribed sleeping pills on his behalf was clearly a mistake and negligence. We apologize." "His use of sleeping pills has been under the supervision of the medical team and according to the prescribed dosage, and there was no intermediary prescription.

In the process, there were several cases where a third party (PSY's manager) took sleeping pills on his behalf, and the police are currently investigating," concluded the P NATION representative.
