South Korean actor Jang Dong Ju has announced his retirement from acting and the entertainment industry. He shared the news on his personal Instagram account and explained his reasons to his fans.
"As of today, I will be stepping down as actor Jang Dong Ju. Even though I am leaving the stage, I will never forget the love you all shared," actor Jang Dong Ju stated on Friday, May 15, 2026.
He further said, "I sincerely thank the director, staff, and actors who believed in and supported me despite my shortcomings. Furthermore, thanks to the fans who have always been by my side, I was able to experience this with joy."
Jang Dong Ju revealed that he experienced a hijacking and extortion that lasted several days. The incident occurred last summer. "The caller knew my every move, and my phone was hijacked. From that day until today, not a day goes by that I don't feel like I'm in hell," Jang Dong Ju explained.
He explained that he had changed his number three times and tried to escape, but all attempts failed. He also experienced a financial crisis, to the point that his family sold their house and their debts continued to mount.
“I lost the happiness of my family and when I realized it, many people I cared about were hurt because of me,” said Jang Dong Ju. In 2025, the actor drew attention after posting an Instagram post.
His agency claimed they couldn't contact Jang Dong Ju until they finally met and confirmed his condition was improving. Jang Dong Ju is an actor born in October 1994 who has starred in various Korean dramas and films.
He rose to fame after starring in the drama School 2017 and appearing in the music video for DAY6's " Shoot Me." This year, he starred in the drama No Tail to Tell with Kim Hye Yoon and Lomon.
