Korean actor Jang Dong-joo announced his surprise retirement from the entertainment industry at the age of 31. This is not the first time he has caused controversy in recent months. With a surprise Instagram post, actor Jang Dong-joo announced his retirement from acting at the age of 31.

Throughout his career, he appeared in K-dramas such as "Let Me Be Your Knight," "Human by Accident," and "Class of Lies." He also had roles in films like "Honest Candidate" and "Count." "I've lived for a long time under the title of actor, and received so much love and support.

All the times I laughed and cried on screen have been the best moments of my life," Jang Dong-joo wrote in his post. "Although I'm leaving the stage, I will cherish the hearts you've given me for the rest of my life."

According to ChosunBiz, the name of South Korean actor Jang Dong-joo caused concern several months ago when, in November 2025, he posted an apology on social media and then "disappeared," only to reappear in January.

Upon his return to the public eye, he revealed that he had been hacked and had received threats. "I received a call from an unknown number and discovered my phone had been hacked. I borrowed money by any means necessary," he said earlier this year.

"Because of the debts that suddenly arose, they piled up even more, and I lost billions of won. I'm drowning in debt."  Media outlets have reported that the actor did not discuss his retirement decision with his talent agency, Management W.

The agency has reportedly tried to contact him to verify the retirement announcement, but has not been able to reach him. Jang Dong-joo has given few statements to local media in recent hours, simply reiterating his decision and asking that questions be submitted in writing.

He also reportedly stated that he was already in contact with his agency. It was later reported that the actor no longer appeared on Management W's official website. From the hacking incident to the sudden retirement announcement, this is the third time the South Korean actor has changed representation agencies.
