South Korean actor and singer Cha Eun Woo underwent baptism while serving his mandatory military service. He has now officially converted to Catholicism, Fantagio's management confirmed in an official announcement.
The WonderFools actor's baptismal name has been in the spotlight. He chose John the Apostle. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, John was one of Jesus' original twelve apostles.
Historical data indicates he was the youngest of the twelve and the only one to live to old age. Biblical scholars and traditional church historians associate John the Apostle with several important manuscripts in history.
These include the New Testament including the Gospel of John, three letters, and the Book of Revelation which he wrote while living in exile on the island of Patmos, Greece.
Fantagio didn't elaborate on why Cha Eun Woo chose Yohanes as his baptismal name. The management only issued an official statement regarding the baptism, which limited it to the name announcement.
"Cha Eun Woo received the baptismal name John at a baptism ceremony held last June," Fantagio stated in a statement, as quoted by the Korea Times on Thursday (July 2, 2026).
New1 wrote that this process took place during a religious ceremony at the military barracks. Soldiers serving in South Korea's mandatory military service are permitted to participate in religious activities.
This is a voluntary activity that anyone can participate in, regardless of their previous religious affiliation. During one of those moments, Cha Eun Woo and several other members underwent a crucial stage in their spiritual journey. The baptism process went smoothly.
This is the first time Cha Eun Woo and Fantagio's management have been open about their religion. Previously, they had always avoided any affiliation with any particular religion, even though Cha Eun Woo had been caught wearing Buddhist paraphernalia several times.
