Panasonic has launched its new box-style camera, the LUMIX BS1H, which is a successor to the LUMIX BGH1 that was launched last year . The BGH1 was the company’s first attempt at a box-styled production camera and it was quite successful, especially in reality TV shows. The LUMIX BS1H takes it one step further by incorporating the goodness of the full-frame Panasonic LUMIX S1H shooter and packing it in a compact, cube-shaped body.

What it misses out on in comparison with the S1H is that it has no built-in screen, EVF, in-body stabilization, or grip. This provides it with a much lighter footprint as it weighs just a shade under 600g, which would make it easier to operate on gimbals than the full-frame S1H. As with all such box-style cameras, it is modular and comes with ports and accessory-mounting threads to add whatever suits your needs.

The Panasonic LUMIX BS1H inherits the colour science from the LUMIX S1H and sports a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor with Dual Native ISO technology. It is capable of 6K and anamorphic 4K video recording. It offers simultaneous 6K 24p 4:2:0 10-bit (3:2) or 5.9K (30p/25p/24p) 4:2:0 10-bit (16:9) internal video recording and 4K 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI Live Output external video recording.

The Panasonic Lumix BS1H uses a body that is made using a combination of aluminium and magnesium. It has an inbuilt cooling fan to keep the temperature in check. Coming to its connectivity features, it has an ethernet port that lets you stream 4K/60p quality via a wired LAN connection. Panasonic’s LUMIX Tether for Multicam software also lets you hook up to twelve different BS1H cameras at once.

The camera’s Genlock and Timecode in/out ports support synchronised video recording in all the connected cameras. The camera has SDI, HDMI output ports, and dual-SD card slots (UHS-II compatible). It comes with eleven 1/4″-20 mount points distributed around all sides of the camera to facilitate rigging.

As for pricing and availability, the Panasonic LUMIX BS1H is priced at $3499 in the US, £2,999 in the UK, and AU$5,299 in Australia. It will be available from November 2021. This makes it $1,500 expensive compared to its predecessor, the LUMIX BGH1 while being substantially cheaper than the Red Comodo 6K which is priced at a whopping $6,000.
