Deadpool & Wolverine successfully returned to the top of the North American box office this week after being overtaken to second place by Alien: Romulus. According to Box Office Mojo data on Monday August 26, 2024, the Deadpool 3 film earned a profit of US$18.3 million in the fifth week of screening.
Having dropped 39 percent from last week's earnings, this achievement is still quite high compared to the second week's earnings of Alien: Romulus which pocketed US$16.2 million, down 61 percent from the first week of screening. With this achievement, Deadpool 3 has earned a total of US$577.2 million domestically.
Meanwhile, the film earned US$634.1 million internationally, reaching a global total of US$1.2 billion. On the other hand, Alien: Romulus collected US$72.6 million domestically and US$152.8 million internationally. Globally, the latest saga of the Alien franchise managed to collect US$225.4 million.
The achievements of these two latest films actually extend Disney's achievements as a production house in dominating the big screen since the pandemic ended. Previously, Disney had made a profit thanks to the screening of Inside Out 2.
"This is a remarkable turnaround for Disney, which was largely invisible, and quite surprisingly, last year and throughout the pandemic," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, as reported by the New York Post on Sunday August 25, 2024.
"They've released a couple of billion-dollar movies so far and Moana 2 is still in development. This is a big comeback year for Disney, no doubt about it," he continued. In third place, there is the drama film It Ends with Us which has been perched in third place for three consecutive weeks.
The film is adapted from a controversial novel and managed to rake in $11.8 million this week. That achievement experienced a 50.2 percent decline from the previous week. Domestically, the film It Ends with Us pocketed $120.8 million. Meanwhile, in fourth place is newcomer Blink Twice, with a profit of US$7.3 million. And next in fifth place is The Forge which has a box office debut of US$6.6 million.
