Simu Liu has actually been in the acting world for more than 10 years, but his name only really soared after he became the main star in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In a panel at FanExpo Canada, Simu Liu said that he would love to try his hand at a romantic comedy or romcom.

Liu has appeared in action-comedy films throughout his career, but he wants to try a new challenge as a lead actor in the romantic genre. " I really want to do a romantic comedy. I did a smaller romantic comedy a few years ago, but it didn't feel like it fully fulfilled my desires.

I would love to do a bigger romantic comedy and find a great actress to collaborate with ," said Simu Liu, quoted from Collider on Tuesday August 27, 2024. The romantic comedy he was referring to earlier was  Andy Fickman's One True Loves (2023), which stars Simu Liu opposite Luke Bracey and Phillippa Soo.

The story follows Emma, a woman who is grieving after her husband is declared dead. Her best friend, Sam, played by Liu, is there as a shoulder for Emma to lean on. As time goes by, their relationship develops into more than just friends. However, everything changes when Emma's husband is still alive and returns just as Emma is preparing to marry Sam.

Simu Liu will reprise his role as Shang-Chi in the yet-to-be-released sequel. The first film, released in 2021, was a critical and commercial success, prompting the sequel to be greenlit. But more than three years later, there is still no official release date for Shang-Chi 2 . Liu recently confirmed that the sequel is still on the way.

He could not confirm when the sequel would air or what the storyline would be. With a slew of sequels and new films slated for release in the next few years, Shang-Chi's place in the MCU slate is still up in the air. Recent reports suggest that Liu's Shang-Chi was originally planned to have a major role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

However, due to legal issues facing Jonathan Majors, the film was changed to Avengers: Doomsday which was confirmed by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con. The film will feature the villain Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. With time before the Shang-Chi sequel is made, Liu has the opportunity to find a romantic comedy role that suits his needs.
