"Gangnam B-Side" presents a very emotional plot in the fifth episode. The reason is, one of the important characters from the Disney+ drama, Kim Jae Hee (BIBI), chooses to sacrifice her life. In "Gangnam B-Side", Jae Hee is portrayed as one of the "women" taken care of by Yoon Gil Ho ( Ji Chang Wook ) in the Gangnam area.
Although the two have a business relationship, their bond goes much deeper, and their history is complicated. In episode 5 of "Gangnam B-Side", Jae Hee chooses to commit suicide rather than suffer at the hands of her enemies. Her death is shocking and devastating for Gil Ho.
The man had been chasing the mastermind behind Jae Hee's death, but ended up getting hit by a car. As soon as the episode aired, viewers of "Gangnam B-Side" immediately protested loudly on social media. Viewers were unhappy with Jae Hee's death, the timing of her death, or how the story was written.
One viewer described Jae Hee's death as "cruel" and called the drama's lack of focus a "big mess." Now that Jae Hee, the "heart of the drama," has been killed off, "Gangnam B-Side" will likely focus more on other, less interesting characters for the remaining episodes.
Other viewers felt that Jae Hee's actions during episode 5 of "Gangnam B-Side", including his decision to jump instead of fighting, showed how badly the script of the drama was written and it was obvious that the writers wanted to get rid of the character.
On the other hand, the overall plot of "Gangnam B-Side" also drew criticism from South Korean journalists. The excessive dialogue and contrived actions of the antagonists, coupled with the overused or monotonous depiction of Gangnam's nightlife, risked pulling "Gangnam B-Side" viewers out of the story.
For a society already inundated with daily reports of real-world violent crimes, the repeated use of these themes in the media only adds to the fatigue. The drama makes viewers wonder, "Is there really nothing left to tell without 'Gangnam,' 'drugs,' 'sex crimes,' and 'murder'?"
