Actress Kim Ji Won will appear as a genius surgeon in the latest SBS drama titled "Doctor X". Ahead of its broadcast, SBS has released several still cuts showing Kim Ji Won's transformation as Gye Soo Jung, a doctor with extraordinary skills in the operating room.
"Doctor X" is a medical noir drama adapted from the popular Japanese series of the same name. The drama follows Gye Soo Jung, a genius surgeon who proves the value of a doctor through her abilities and skills, while also navigating a hospital system rife with vested interests and corruption.
In the drama, Gye Soo Jung is portrayed as someone who is unfazed by the power structure at Guseo University Hospital. In the operating room, she appears assertive and possesses exceptional surgical skills. However, outside the operating room, Gye Soo Jung displays an eccentric, unique, and humble side in her daily life.
This marks Kim Ji Won's first time playing a doctor. As reported by soompi on September 30, 2026, to fully immerse herself in the role, she underwent special preparation, including studying the various movements and techniques required for surgical scenes.
Kim Ji Won stated, "I learned the surgical techniques required for the operating room scenes from a medical advisor and took the time to familiarize myself with them." Kim Ji Won's performance also received praise from director Lee Jung Rim.
He said the actress was able to convincingly portray both sides of Gye Soo Jung. "Kim Ji Won was able to convincingly shift between the two contrasting sides of Gye Soo Jung—her incredibly powerful presence in the operating room and her eccentric and human side outside of it.
It's hard to imagine anyone other than Kim Ji Won as Gye Soo Jung," said Lee Jung Rim. The director also revealed that Kim Ji Won's skill in carrying out the surgical scenes even earned praise from the doctors who served as medical advisors on set.
"During the surgical scenes, the doctors who served as medical advisors on set even gave her a round of applause," he said. Meanwhile, actress Lee Jung Eun, who plays Jang Hee Sook, also praised Kim Ji Won's acting skills.
"Every time I made eye contact and acted with Kim Ji Won on set, I felt her emotions flow naturally. I thought, 'As expected, she's an actress with incredible depth,'" said Lee Jung Eun. The drama "Doctor X" is scheduled to premiere on October 9, 2026, at 9:50 PM KST.
