Joker : Folie à Deux tops the North American box office with US$40 million. However, the figure is far from the expectations for the Joker (2019) sequel's debut , which was around US$50-65 million. In fact, as reported by Variety on Sunday October 6, 2024, the expectation had been lowered from the initial prediction of around US$70 million.
The figure is also far from the first weekend earnings of its predecessor which reached up to US$92 million in the same date range. Joker 2's first achievement is a bad start because of the word of mouth reviews that tend to be negative for the film.
Based on Box Office Mojo data, the Joker sequel has grossed US$121 million globally after adding profits from international markets of US$81.1 million. "When you greenlight a sequel, you hope it's going to do as well as the first one," said entertainment industry analyst Jeff Book of Exhibitor Relations.
Previously, Joker was a standalone film. However, it became Phoenix's highest-grossing comic book adaptation and won an Oscar. "This is definitely a concern. Warners wants a sequel and may be spending too much money to make it happen," said Jeff Book.
Joker: Folie à Deux tells the story of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) who is now a patient at Arkham State Hospital. The story also involves many characters in the Gotham universe, such as Harvey Dent to Harley Quinn.
Arthur Fleck is locked up in Arkham Asylum after killing five people two years ago while he was the Joker. Now, Fleck is preparing to face justice for his actions. He initially faces the trial with a sense of emptiness. However, that feeling slowly disappears when Fleck meets another patient, Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga).
The woman who is familiarly called Harley Quinn turned out to fall in love with Fleck when he was the Joker. They both caused chaos in Arkham and Gotham. The film began development in June 2022 and will be filmed in late 2022 through April 2023.
