Singer Shawn Mendes has been candid about his sexual orientation. Mendes admitted that he has been called gay since he was a teenager. Shawn Mendes spoke about his sexual orientation during his concert in Colorado, United States, Monday October 28, 2024.
His statement went viral after a fan shared a video of Mendes speaking during his concert on social media. In a video posted to social media, Shawn Mendes paused his performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado to suddenly talk about his sexual orientation while performing his new song The Mountain, which touches on his sexuality in its lyrics.
"Since I was really young, there's been this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long. I think it's a bit ridiculous, because I think sexuality is such a beautiful and complex thing and it's really hard to put it in a box," the 26-year-old singer said.
The Treat You Better singer added that sexual orientation is something very personal to him. He himself is still trying to understand it. "Something I was trying to figure out for myself, something I hadn't figured out, and still haven't fully figured out," Camila Cabello's ex-girlfriend said.
"The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, like everyone else, I'm still figuring it out. Sometimes I don't really know, and other times I do. And it's really scary because we live in a society that has so many opinions about it," Shawn Mendes continued.
Mendes has spoken about his sexuality before. In a 2020 chat with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, he said he had been called gay since he was 15. "It's been really, really frustrating for me because there are people in my life who are really close to me who are gay and haven't come out.
And I feel really angry for those people. It's a really complicated thing. You want to say, 'I'm not gay, but it's okay if I am gay - and there's nothing wrong with being gay, but I'm not.' You don't really know how to respond to that," Shawn Mendes said.
