"Gangnam B-Side" now has only two final episodes left. Nearing its end, the Disney+ drama starring Ji Chang Wook and BIBI has drawn criticism from journalists for its overly monotonous plot. "Gangnam B-Side" initially received praise for its fast-paced plot and the cast's stellar acting.

Chang Wook shone with his natural charisma, fully embodying the brash and headstrong Yoon Gil Ho. His fleeting, gentle gaze, reminiscent of a romantic movie, adds a surprising contrast that momentarily lifts the heavy atmosphere of “Gangnam B-Side.”

Meanwhile, BIBI and Ha Yoon Kyung inject energy into the drama, showing off both their familiar strengths and new sides to their acting. Next, the plot of a top K-pop idol getting involved in a serious crime makes sense considering the real-world parallels.

However, the drama reduces the criminals to just another cliche psychopath. The excessive dialogue and contrived actions of the antagonists, coupled with the overused, monotonous depiction of Gangnam nightlife, risks pulling the "Gangnam B-Side" audience out of the story.

For a society already inundated with daily reports of real-world violent crimes, the repeated use of these themes in the media only adds to the fatigue. The drama makes viewers wonder, "Is there really nothing left to tell without 'Gangnam,' 'drugs,' 'sex crimes,' and 'murder'?" As Gangnam B-Side enters its second half, it’s clear that the drama’s plot is entering new territory.

While there are some predictable and disappointing aspects, the fast pace and standout performances provide more entertainment. Whether "Gangnam B-Side" can maintain its momentum and carve out a unique identity in the crowded crime genre, or succumb to an overly ambitious start and fall flat on its face, remains to be seen.
