The entertainment agency Konnect Entertainment, founded by singer Kang Daniel, is threatened with closure and ceasing operations. Quoting from Allkpop on Tuesday May 21, 2024, news media outlets reported that all of the agency's staff had been laid off and resigned, including a number of artists under it.
Furthermore, all shareholders of Konnect Entertainment have also decided to part ways with all artists affiliated with the agency, amidst the legal battle that Kang Daniel is facing. Kang Daniel's exclusive contract with his own company will also end soon. He also plans to leave the agency, rather than carrying out his solo activities under the auspices of a one-man agency.
As a result, Konnect Entertainment was forced to cease operations. Around 20 employees have been laid off and resigned, including company vehicles which are no longer used. Not only that, the Konnect Entertainment agency office in the Sinsa-dong area, Gangnam-gu, has also been vacated since the beginning of this year.
Konnect Entertainment was founded by Kang Daniel in June 2019 as his personal agency. Even though it started with one man agency status, Konnect then recruited a number of artists, such as Yuju, former GFriend, and the dance crew We Dem Boyz.
However, after 5 years of operation, Konnect Entertainment was threatened with disbandment, following a legal war between Kang Daniel and one of the agency's largest shareholders. As media reported, Kang Daniel filed a criminal lawsuit against the shareholders of Konnect Entertainment, alleging embezzlement of funds amounting to IDR 165 billion.
Woori Law Firm, which represents Kang Daniel, said that the idol, who has protected the company as CEO and artist for the last 5 years, has filed a lawsuit to minimize the negative impact and losses on artists and their staff who have given them trust like family all this time.
"We have worked hard for a year before filing a lawsuit. We decided there was no other way to resolve this problem, other than taking legal action and filing criminal charges," said Kang Daniel's attorney representative, quoted via Naver. On the other hand, Kang Daniel will also step down from his position as CEO of Konnect Entertainment following his contract which will expire in early June.
