Angelina Jolie recently made headlines after her biopic Maria received an 8 -minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. This was a tribute to the legendary opera diva, Maria Callas. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Angelina Jolie revealed that the film carries quite a deep emotional weight with a story that explores the dark side of Maria Callas' life, including the various obstacles she faced both personally and professionally.

" She (Maria Callas) had ups and downs towards the end of her life, the happiest moments were when she really felt connected, but there were times when she felt like she couldn't, and that really devastated her, making her feel like she couldn't connect ," said Angelina Jolie, quoted on Tuesday September 10, 2024.

In addition to Angelina Jolie, the film also features Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Pierfrancesco Favino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino. The script itself was written by Steven Knight. This biopic by Pablo Larraín tells the story of a figure who lived his life from the 1920s to the 1970s, sacrificing everything—including his voice and his life—to pursue what he loved most.

Maria was acquired by Netflix even before it premiered globally on August 29 at the Venice Film Festival. For those who are not familiar with her, Maria Callas is a legendary opera singer who has performed on various stages around the world. Born in America, this Greek soprano began her professional career as a teenager with the Royal Opera of Athens in 1941, performing in Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca .

One of the great moments in her career was while in Verona, Italy in 1947 in the opera La Gioconda which really catapulted her name as a leading international opera singer. In the 1960s, Maria Callas's appearances on the opera stage began to diminish and her quality declined. This condition also encouraged him to switch to teaching. He spent the rest of his life away from the public spotlight and died in 1977 at the age of 53.
