Will Smith has decided to step down from his lead role in the action film Sugar Bandits . According to a report from Deadline on Friday September 6, 2024, Will Smith's reason for stepping down was due to scheduling conflicts. In the film, he was originally planned to play a former special forces soldier who leads an elite vigilante group to eradicate drug trafficking in Boston.

Along with AGC Studios, Westbrook is now looking for a replacement actor for the role previously set to be played by Smith.  Sugar Bandits is directed by Stefano Sollima and is based on Chuck Hogan's novel Devils in Exile. Sugar Bandits was originally scheduled to begin filming this fall with locations primarily in Boston and Montreal, once pre-production and casting were underway.

However, due to Smith's uncertain commitments, the film's production was delayed. Bad Boys: Ride or Die marks Will Smith's second film release after Emancipation since his slapping incident with Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.

Will Smith's reunion with Martin Lawrence in the fourth film in the Bad Boys series was one of the most successful, grossing over $400 million globally and receiving positive reviews from critics, as well as the best audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in the franchise 's history.

In addition to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the film also stars Jacob Scipio, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Paola Núñez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Dennis McDonald, and Melanie Liburd. Chances are, Ride or Die won't be the end of Smith and Lawrence's run as the cop duo patrolling the streets of Miami to fight crime.

The duo has hinted at plans to produce Bad Boys 5 before handing the franchise over to younger actors. Discussions about continuing the film are reportedly already underway at Sony Pictures. Will Smith's success in Ride or Die also led him to be involved in another Sony project, the sci-fi film Resistor. In addition to acting, Smith will also be a producer for the film adapted from the novel Influx.
