"Dark Nuns" managed to reap positive results amidst the tight competition of South Korean films. The film starring Song Hye Kyo and Jeon Yeo Bin has exceeded its break-even point (return on investment) in just three weeks after its release.
According to the Korean Film Council's unified ticket sales system, "Dark Nuns" attracted 83,540 viewers nationwide from January 7 to 9, 2025. The film ranked fourth at the box office. The cumulative number of viewers now stands at 1,600,314.
With this achievement, Dark Nuns has successfully reached its break-even point within 3 weeks of its release. The film, which has a production budget of 10.3 billion won, managed to lower its break-even point to 1.6 million viewers by securing pre-sales in 160 countries before its release.
The success of "Dark Nuns" is inseparable from Hye Kyo's extraordinary dedication. To mark her comeback to the big screen after 11 years, the actress made her first variety show appearance in 23 years and filmed YouTube content.
Hye Kyo really put in significant effort for the promotion. The actress also actively participated in welcoming events on stage and fan meetings since the Lunar New Year holiday until the second week of its release.
Although "Dark Nuns" initially gained momentum during the Lunar New Year holiday, it was overtaken by "Hitman 2" during the period. However, thanks to the large number of viewers in the early days of its release, the film was able to surpass the break-even point.
After reaching its first goal with its domestic release, “Dark Nuns” will continue its international rollout, starting with Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Laos on January 6, followed by North America and Myanmar on January 7, 2025, and Singapore and Malaysia on January 13, 2025.
On the other hand, “Dark Nuns” follows the story of two nuns, Yunia (Hye Kyo) and Michaela (Yeo Bin), as they embark on a dangerous exorcism to save Hui Jun (Moon Woo Jin), a boy possessed by an evil spirit.
"Dark Nuns" largely mirrors the structure of "The Priests": a young soul tormented by an evil spirit, a protagonist belittled by the church, a young assistant who assists with the ritual, a character with a dark past, and a climactic exorcism sequence. However, "Dark Nuns" swaps the male characters for female characters.
However, the change from priests to nuns brings a new perspective. The film addresses the taboo of unordained nuns not being able to perform exorcisms and gender discrimination within the church. Their defiant attitude and solidarity against these obstacles resonate well with contemporary social issues.
