Lee Jae Wook recently starred in Netflix's latest historical drama titled Dear Hongrang. The drama has also successfully entered the top 10 most-watched dramas on Netflix this month since its release on May 16, 2025.

But who would have thought, behind the success of this drama, Lee Jae Wook as the main actor had rejected the drama offer. The actor admitted that he wanted to take a break from historical dramas after previously starring in Alchemy of Soul.

"I filmed with a really long breath and after that I said 'I don't want to wear hanbok for a while,'" Lee Jae Wook said in his recent interview seen Friday May 23, 2025. However, the desire to reject this drama fell after the writer of the drama Dear Hongrang wrote a letter to Lee Jae Wook.

The five to six-page letter summarizes Lee Jae Wook's career journey and matches the character of Hong Rang with characters Lee Jae Wook has played before. "The author wrote a 5-6 page letter about my career journey since my debut," he said.

"He matched the various sides of HongRang's character with the characters I've played," Lee Jae Wook continued. The Korean drama Dear Hongrang tells the story of Hong Rang (Lee Jae Wook), a young man from a wealthy family who is prepared to continue his family's business empire.

However, when he was eight years old, Hong Rang suddenly disappeared. Twelve years later, he returned with amnesia. Jae Yi (Jo Bo Ah) is Hong Rang's half-sister. She has always hoped for Hong Rang to return.

However, she begins to doubt whether the man who returned is really the Hong Rang she knew. Jae Yi then finds out the origin of the young man who claims to be Hong Rang. However, as time goes by, Jae Yi likes the young man.

Another conflict arises from Mu Jin, Hong Rang's father's adopted son. Mu Jin is predicted to replace Hong Rang as the successor to the family business. He also likes Jae Yi who is starting to be interested in Hong Rang.
