South Korean actor Jang Dong Joo committed a daring act by cutting off his own pinky finger, which he then uploaded to his Instagram Story on Friday (May 22, 2026). The extreme act, using a knife and scissors, was prompted by his despair over a series of failed promises.

Shocking news about the former actor in  the film No Tail To Tell (2026) was reported by Soompi. Before committing self-harm, the man born on October 25, 1994, had caused a stir among his management by suddenly announcing his retirement from acting.

The actor admitted that the finger-cutting action symbolized his disappointment in himself for frequently breaking commitments. In the caption of his video, Jang Dong Joo expressed his deep regret for disappointing those closest to him.

"I cut off my innocent little finger. A promise I've broken thousands of times to myself, my family, my friends, and my colleagues. The last promise I failed to keep to my father, the one I tied with my little finger," Jang Dong Joo wrote.

South Korean culture recognizes the tradition of interlocking little fingers as a symbol of a sacred promise. The actor's despair culminated in hatred for the body part he perceived as witnessing his failure.

"This little finger has broken many promises. I hated it and cut it off," said Jang Dong Joo. He claimed this extreme step was a turning point in improving his morals and his future.

Although he acknowledged his actions were wrong, he urged the public not to follow suit. "This is not an act to threaten or suggest bad choices to anyone, but a way to instill my determination to change my wrong life into my mind," said Jang Dong Joo.

Following the horrific incident, the actor confirmed that he had received appropriate medical treatment. His family is currently providing full support and protection for his psychological and physical well-being.

Jang Dong Joo's life pressures were reportedly mounting due to a billion-won debt stemming from a blackmail case. This burden worsened after his agency threatened legal action for unilaterally retiring without management approval.
