Shocking news came from three EXO members, namely Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin, who sued SM Entertainment for canceling their exclusive contract. Quoting from Allkpop on Thursday June 1, 2023, according to a report from Law Firm LIN, which represents Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin, stated that the three EXO members had sent a contract cancellation warning to SM Entertainment.
According to LIN, Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin have submitted a total of 7 requests for documents detailing their income and payments from March to May. The three believed there was a problem with the income they earned, and requested a transparency report on income from SM Entertainment, as their right.
However, the agency said that they could not provide this information to their artists. Furthermore, LIN stated that SM Entertainment forces their artists to sign long contracts of up to 12-13 years, and recently asked their artists to extend their contracts to at least 17-18 years.
Artists believe that SM Entertainment as a major agency uses its power to force their artists to sign 'slave contracts'. This violates existing artist contract law regulations. Therefore, Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin decided to take legal action against SM Entertainment and represent other artists under SM Entertainment who are also under long-term contracts like them.
Hearing this news, many fans criticized SM Entertainment's actions, which have long been known for their contract system which was too long and restrained the artist. " History is repeating itself. It seems that SM Entertainment really didn't do self-improvement with their unfair contracts.
It's a shame their artists who have worked hard have to experience this," said one fan. " I think SM will learn from the JYJ and Hangeng cases. But they still ignore their artists," said other fans. " This is the contract they signed when Lee Soo Man was still in power.
The old man really acted like communism, even though he produced many great artists ," said another fan. " SM even refused to give them a payment transparency report. Canceling the contract is a good thing for now. Big management mistakes are clearly visible in the company ," said another fan.
