Actor and senior singer from South Korea, Kim Min Jong decided not to renew his contract with the agency SM Entertainment. Launching KBIZoom on Thursday July 13, 2023, SM responded to Munhwa Ilbo's request to confirm the facts and said "Our exclusive contract with Kim Min Jong ends at the end of June", then added "We agreed not to renew the contract.
Please provide great support for Kim Min Jong on his new path in the future.” After 17 years working as a cover artist for SM Entertainment, Kim Min Jong has always maintained a close relationship with the company's former executive producer, Lee Soo Man, even becoming a registered director of SM Entertainment.
When a dispute over SM's management rights arose earlier this year, Kim Min Jong claimed, “The current co-CEO unilaterally cut off contact with Teacher Lee Soo Man and announced his separation without consulting. Please respect Lee Soo Man, who dedicated his entire life to building and developing SM Entertainment."
Not only that, when the management rights dispute reached its peak in February this year, Kim Min Jong attended the “Korea-Mongolia Economic Banquet” held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, assisting former producer Lee Soo Man , actor Yoon Da Hoon, and Lee Jae Ryong.
Due to this, some have raised concerns over the future of celebrities under SM Entertainment who stood on Lee Soo Man's side like Kim Min Jong when the management rights dispute ended. Even so, one insider said that this was a natural thing when the contract time expired and both parties decided to terminate the contract.
Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that the contract of Yoon Da Hoon who signed an exclusive contract with SM in 2006 with Kim Min Jong has not expired. This of course raises a comparison between the two celebrities' relationship with the agency because of the different decisions. What will happen to SM Entertainment in the future?
