Jang Wonyoung or IVE's Wonyoung and her agency, Starship Entertainment , have won a lawsuit against YouTuber Sojang in court. Quoting from KBIZoom on Wednesday January 17, 2024, Starship Entertainment officially announced that it had won the civil lawsuit filed by Wonyoung against the famous YouTuber Sojang.
Last month, Chief Judge Park Jiwon of the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of several plaintiffs in a 100 million won (approximately Rp. 1.16 billion) compensation lawsuit filed by Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment against Mr. Park (Sojang).
The court asked YouTuber Sojang to pay compensation of 100 million won, calculated at an annual rate of 12 percent until the day the payment is paid in full. Sojang not only has to pay the interest, but also the court costs incurred during the lawsuit. Wonyoung filed a claim for compensation in October last year.
Her lawyers said that all content uploaded to Sojang's YouTube channel consistently contained false facts or personal insults, and presented evidence that the videos posted by Mr. Park on her YouTube channel were fake. According to Wonyoung's lawyer, this is clearly a civil illegal act, and also constitutes criminal defamation and insult.
In the civil lawsuit and criminal case indicting Sojang, she claimed that she did not know it was wrong, and stated that she had the right to know about celebrities. Lawyer Jang Wonyoung said, “The artist and agency felt unbearable anger at the fact that he even claimed that the video was illegal because it was uploaded for public interest.
Not only Jang Wonyoung, there are also other celebrities who have become victims of YouTuber Sojang's fake content. These celebrities even experienced psychological suffering and entertainment activities were hampered.
Meanwhile, Starship Entertainment received Sojang's identity through a United States court last year and filed a lawsuit. Sojang deleted her YouTube account along with her apology, but Starship Entertainment continued to pursue the lawsuit. With Wonyoung's victory, YouTubers who spread false facts about celebrities can now not escape the law.
