Pressure from South Korean filmmakers and entertainment figures regarding the investigation into the death of actor Lee Sun Kyun finally received a response from the police.

Launching from Allkpop on Friday January 19, 2024, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the South Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency announced the start of their investigation into a case previously handled by the Incheon Police Agency.

This case involves actor Lee Sun Kyun, who previously faced drug charges. The transfer of investigative authority to the South Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency occurred after the Incheon Police Agency requested external assistance on January 15, 2024.

The move aims to address potential concerns of bias and ensure fairness in investigating information leaks related to the Lee Sun Kyun case. Lee Sun Kyun's drug use allegations were first revealed on October 19 last year. Initially, the media simply referred to him as "Top actor L who uses drugs".

However, not long after, Lee Sun Kyun's identity was revealed to the public. Legal sources indicated that the allegations came to police attention not based on statements from a 29-year-old entertainment venue manager (identified as A) but on information from a 28-year-old former actress (identified as B).

B approached the police on October 10, 2023, showed A's hair as evidence and implicated Lee Sun Kyun based on recorded telephone conversations. B was then arrested for extorting 50 million won from Lee Sun Kyun on charges of extortion.

After undergoing a series of investigations and being questioned by the police three times, Lee Sun Kyun was surprisingly found dead in his car on December 27 2023. This incident left deep sorrow not only for the family, but also for South Korean film people.

On January 12, 2024, the director of the film "Parasite" Bong Joon Ho along with a number of Korean actors and filmmakers gathered and held a press conference regarding Lee Sun Kyun's death.

They criticized the police and media for publishing confidential information about the actor without checking the existing facts. They also announced their intention to call for the "Lee Sun Kyun Act", a law to protect artists' human rights, in order to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
