Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou are reportedly no longer directors for the live action Street Fighter film currently being worked on by Legendary and Capcom. This news was quoted from The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday June 18, 2024, which stated that they were withdrawing because their schedule collided with A24's latest film project entitled Bring Her Back.
As a result, Legendary decided to look for another director so that this project could continue without having to wait for them. Danny and Michael's involvement in the Street Fighter project was previously announced in April last year. Even so, until now there has been no official confirmation from either of them regarding their decision to resign.
News of Danny and Michael Philippou's departure from the Street Fighter project emerged shortly after the film's logo was displayed at the Las Vegas Licensing Expo. This shows that the enthusiasm to start this project is very high according to the THR report. Legendary doesn't want to wait until production on Bring Her Back is finished.
However, now they have to look for a new director who is ready to work on this video game adaptation , even though the two previous films were said to have failed at the box office. The 1994 film Street Fighter and 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li received poor reviews. Street Fighter (1994) only got an 11% rating from critics and 20% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Meanwhile, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) received a lower rating, namely only 3% from critics and 18% from viewers on the same platform. These two films not only received criticism for weak stories and lacking character development, but also did poorly at the box office.
If the news about the departure of the Philippou brothers from the Street Fighter project turns out to be true, Legendary will face the challenge of finding a replacement who truly loves originality and understands the mistakes of previous film adaptations. Since it first appeared in 1987, Street Fighter has become a phenomenon among fans. Characters like Ryu, Chun-Li, and Blanka have been household names for nearly four decades.
