SEVENTEEN was officially appointed as UNESCO goodwill ambassadors on Wednesday June 26, 2024 local time. The inauguration was carried out by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.
Azoulay officially inaugurated SEVENTEEN by giving the boy group members their appointment letters after delivering a welcoming speech. "I am happy to present you with certificates and welcome you as members of our family," Azoulay said, as reported by Korea JoongAng Daily.
Joshua was SEVENTEEN's representative in delivering a speech as well as SEVENTEEN's vision and mission as UNESCO ambassadors for youth throughout the world. "Every dream is meaningful, whether big or small, traditional or innovative. Don't let anyone, including yourself, underestimate your dreams," said Joshua in his speech.
He and SEVENTEEN also promised to donate up to US$1 million. The donation will be given to contribute to UNESCO's Global Youth Grant Scheme program in helping young people throughout the world. The donation will also be a continuation of the #GoingTogether campaign which has been held since August 2022.
One of the campaign projects is the construction of two regional learning centers in East Timor in support of education in Malawi with Pledis Entertainment and the UNESCO National Committee. "In the next round of our Going Together campaign, SEVENTEEN will donate US$1 million to the Global Youth Grant Scheme with UNESCO," said Joshua.
SEVENTEEN became the first K-pop musicians to be appointed as UNESCO ambassadors and the first time UNESCO appointed ambassadors specifically to represent the younger generation. In November 2023, SEVENTEEN gave a speech at a special session of the 13th UNESCO Youth Forum held in Paris and revealed plans to improve education.
SEVENTEEN is the first K-pop artist to be appointed as a UNESCO ambassador. This inauguration is also the first time UNESCO has appointed an ambassador specifically to represent the younger generation. "We pledge to work hard as ambassadors for UNESCO to raise awareness about the important challenges of our time."
