Joker: Folie À Deux or Joker 2 is one of the most anticipated films of the year and will be released in theaters in October. According to Francine Maisler as the casting director, fans should welcome Lady Gaga's presence as Harley Quinn with enthusiasm.
In a Q&A session while attending the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) in the Czech Republic, Francine Maisler appreciated Lady Gaga's performance in the film Joker: Folie À Deux and her ability to act alongside Joaquin Phoenix. He also said that the idea to cast Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn had come from Todd Phillips himself from the start, and he felt that the decision was the right move.
" (Lady Gaga) is so good in her role, guys. She's going to blow you away. I didn't recommend Lady Gaga. It wasn't my idea. It was Todd Phillips, before me. But I have to say, she's a real surprise — and so talented. When I saw her, I was really impressed ," Francine Maisler said, quoted on Sunday July 7, 2024.
" We all know what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, 'Oh, that's in her league.' Something she can do well and be very convincing. But this... She's just incredible. Joaquin is amazing, but [Lady's] ability to compete with Joaquin, and still be authentic — not just overwhelmed by character and performance — shows how incredible she is ," he continued.
Lady Gaga made her film debut as a supporting actress in Machete Kills in 2013, then appeared as a cameo in Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in 2014. Her role in A Star is Born (2018) marked her breakthrough as a star to be reckoned with in the film world. Lady Gaga's performance of the song Shallow won her an Oscar for Best Original Song. She was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in the same film.
After the announcement of the production of Joker: Folie À Deux and the confirmation of Harley Quinn's presence, Lady Gaga's name immediately became a topic of conversation. Joker: Folie À Deux is a sequel to the film Joker (2019) which successfully brought home 2 Oscars from a total of 11 nominations received. Given the track record of achievements made by her previous films, many speculate that Lady Gaga will be one of the main candidates to win the Best Actress award at the upcoming Academy Awards.
