Chae Soo Bin recently had an interview with local media. On that occasion, the actress born in 1994 discussed various things about her latest drama 'When the Phone Rings' which recently ended its broadcast.
One thing Soo Bin talked about was the cheesy lines she and Yoo Yeon Seok had to say in "When the Phone Rings". "When I first read it, I screamed. But during filming, the lines didn't feel awkward," she said. "Yeon Seok delivered it so naturally that even as Hee Joo, I didn't even feel awkward.
It was an interesting experience," she added. Soo Bin also discussed the success of "When the Phone Rings" which reached #2 in the global non-English TV series category. "Even among the cast, we discussed why the drama was successful.
The married women around me seemed to fall in love with Baek Sa Eon (Yeon Seok). I thought the gentle and pure love story was touching, even though there were some rather embarrassing lines," she said. "Seeing international fans' comments on social media also made me realize that the show was well-received," she said.
Soo Bin then recalled the reaction of fans who edited out a scene in the final episode of "When the Phone Rings." "I saw a fan-edited video where the reunion scene between Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Joo in episode 12 was done with a cheerful background.
While watching it, I felt like many viewers had become Hee Joo, falling in love with Sa Eon," he added. "It made me proud and even thought it was funny," Soo Bin added. The actress often used sign language in the drama, a challenging but rewarding experience.
"Learning sign language wasn't that hard, but understanding the reason behind the gestures made it an in-depth process," Soo Bin said. "I always thought it was a beautiful language, and I felt proud when I saw children imitating the signs after watching the drama.
It warms my heart to think that sign language, which is often overlooked, is becoming more understandable," she said. Soo Bin revealed that she didn't want to forget the signs during filming, so she practiced them hard, almost like a choreography.
However, in the middle of filming, I had to adapt to the differences between news-style sign language and international sign language, which was very stressful but ultimately rewarding. Lastly, Soo Bin expressed her desire to explore different genres.
"Although I like romance, I want to challenge myself with a new genre. 'When the Phone Rings' is a romantic thriller, but I want to try a pure thriller or a story based on real life. I want to become a solid actress who can play any role convincingly," she concluded.
