Police announced that they will investigate defamation cases involving actor Kim Soo Hyun and the late Kim Sae Ron on March 24, 2025. At a regular press briefing, Park Hyun Soo, Acting Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, addressed the criminal complaint filed by Kim Soo Hyun against the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
He stated, “The complaint was submitted to Gangnam Police Station on March 20th, and we’re planning to investigate, including interviewing the complainant.” Regarding the defamation case involving the late Kim Sae-ron and YouTuber Lee Jin Ho, he added, “That case was assigned to Seodaemun Police Station on March 17th, and we’re coordinating a time for the complainant to come in.”
The incident arose when Garosero Research Institute released photos of Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron, allegedly provided by the late Kim Sae Ron’s family. Kim Sae Ron’s family and Garosero Research Institute claimed that Kim Soo Hyun had been in a relationship with Kim Sae Ron for six years, starting in November 2015 when she was still a minor.
Kim Soo Hyun’s side initially denied the allegations but later admitted to the relationship after additional photos surfaced. However, the actor’s representatives clarified that the relationship only began after Kim Sae Ron reached adulthood. On March 24, 2025, Kim Soo Hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, announced that they had filed an additional complaint against Kim Se Ui, the operator of Garosero Research Institute, for blackmail.
The agency’s legal representatives stated that Kim Soo Hyun initially filed a complaint on March 20, 2025 against the YouTube channel’s owner for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. However, the channel’s host later reposted the controversial photo and demanded that Disney Plus cancel the release of Kim Soo Hyun’s drama Knock-Off.
They also allegedly threatened to release a shocking video of Kim Soo Hyun if their demand was not met, prompting the agency to file an additional complaint. Meanwhile, Boo Ji Seok, an attorney from Buyou Law Firm representing Kim Sae Ron’s family, filed a defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Lee Jin Ho on March 19th for spreading false information.
Lee Jin Ho had posted multiple videos on his YouTube channel since 2022, denying a past romantic relationship between Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun. After Kim Sae Ron was found dead at her home in Seoul on February 16, 2025, Lee Jin Ho made all related videos private. Kim Sae Ron was caught driving under the influence in Seoul in May 2022 and was fined 20 million won by the court the following year.
Known to have struggled financially afterward, she was found deceased at her home on February 16, 2025. Separately, regarding the death of singer Wheesung, police stated that a syringe was found near his body. They noted, “An autopsy was conducted on March 12, 2025, and the initial results showed an undetermined cause of death. A detailed examination is underway, and we plan to conduct further investigations once the results are available.”
