Gong Hyo Jin finally shared her thoughts regarding the audience's criticism of the plot of the drama "When the Stars Gossip", which was made with a production cost of 50 billion KRW. Her response was included in a video released on the actress' YouTube channel on April 20, 2025.
In the video, Gong Hyo Jin chats casually with her team while slicing onions. The actress reminisces about her experience filming "When the Stars Gossip," which aired on tvN and ended in February 2025. Despite its unique setting and famous cast, "When the Stars Gossip" recorded very low ratings, hovering around 1-3 percent.
In the drama, Gong Hyo Jin plays astronaut Eve Kim, who is in a relationship with Gong Ryong (Lee Min Ho). Gong Hyo Jin said, "The entire process of making this drama was completely new to me. The drama was produced ahead of time, with some parts going through post-production for two years.
The story itself is quite complicated, I can imagine that it won't be easy for viewers to fully understand it." Gong Hyo Jin went on to explain the deeper meaning behind the concept of “When the Stars Gossip.” “From the beginning, the writer wanted to explore the idea of the creation of life.
The main question was: ‘Can people continue their bloodline in zero gravity?’ I play a character who is involved in such research,” the production added. Gong Hyo Jin was also asked if space as a background story might be too early for a Korean drama.
The actress replied, "Every time something new is introduced, it is greeted with divided opinions. Whether it succeeds in the future depends on the hard work of the people who took the first step, even if no one admits it at the time."
Gong Hyo Jin also discussed the controversial ending of "When the Stars Gossip," in which her character died just a day after giving birth. "Whenever the main character dies at the end, people have mixed feelings.
Even my mom struggled with it. I think it was a bit too much for older viewers to fully digest," she wisely shared. Gong Hyo Jin then shared behind-the-scenes details of the physically demanding shoot. "Except for one episode, the entire series was set in space.
Filming zero-gravity scenes took a long time, sometimes more than two months for just one episode. I was suspended by cables for 15 hours a day. I remember screaming, 'Please let me down' because my blood circulation was so bad," she recalled of the difficult filming process.
Gong Hyo Jin ended with gratitude. "It's amazing that we filmed for a whole year. In the second month of filming, I was already worried, 'Will this air?' In the end, we were just grateful that the show actually aired," she concluded.
