Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett's appearance in the final episode of Squid Game Season 3 surprised the public. Although the Korean drama series ended on Friday June 27, 2025, Squid Game is suspected of continuing with a new universe in the United States.

Where Cate Blanchett appears as a survival game recruiter in Los Angeles. The first season of Squid Game (2021) has introduced Korean actor Gong Yoo as a survival game recruiter in Seoul. His character becomes an important figure, who determines the fate of Seong Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) in winning the 45.6 billion won prize to re-infiltrate as a player.

To close the Squid Game trilogy, director and screenwriter Hwang Dong Hyuk brought in Cate Blanchett as a cameo in the final episode. Squid Game Season 3 is set not only in Seoul but also in Los Angeles, where Seong Gi Hun's biological daughter is said to live.

According to Hwang Dong Hyuk, the presence of a female recruiter will create a more dramatic ending for Squid Game Season 3. Cate Blanchett is a fitting cameo, considering her track record in the Hollywood film industry.

The Oscar-winning actress also has the charisma to dominate the ending scene. "We thought that featuring a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and interesting," said Hwang Dong Hyuk, as reported on the official Netflix website.

"And why Cate Blanchett? She's the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn't love her? So we were thrilled to have her on the show. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just a word or two, and that's exactly what she did."

"If Gong Yoo was the Korean recruiter, I thought she (Cate Blanchett) would be a perfect fit as the American recruiter, which would give the story a short but gripping and impactful ending," explained the creator of the internationally acclaimed Squid Game.

Squid Game Season 3 continues the story of Seong Gi Hun's struggle (played by Lee Jung Jae), who is determined to stop the survival game once and for all. On the other hand, the mastermind of the survival game, Front Man (played by Lee Byung Hun) wants to destroy Gi Hun's belief in humanity.

After carrying out the final battle in the sixth episode of Squid Game Season 3, Front Man flies to Los Angeles to meet Gi Hun's daughter. While stopping at a red light, Front Man hears a familiar sound, the sound of a ddakji hitting the ground followed by a loud slap to the face.

The Front Man rolls down his car window and sees Cate Blanchett’s character in a suit playing ddakji with a desperate man in an alleyway. Cate Blanchett’s character looks up and exchanges a glance with the Front Man, before turning her attention to the man who insists on playing again.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong Hyuk expressed his admiration for Cate Blanchett's acting skills despite her short appearance and minimal dialogue. Surprisingly, Cate Blanchett is also adept at playing the traditional Korean card game ddakji, which will be an early invitation for participants in the survival game in Squid Game.

"He's amazing at playing ddakji. I'm sure he managed to flip ddakji on his first try and we were able to get that one long scene right away," Hwang Dong Hyuk concluded. Now, many viewers suspect that Cate Blanchett's cameo appearance will be the opening for the American version of Squid Game.

Where the deadly survival game not only takes place in South Korea but also in the United States. Fans hope that the American version of Squid Game will reap the success of the original Korean version with new players.
