Choi Woo Shik and Moon Ga Young will be acting together for the first time. The two are being eyed to star in the Korean drama adaptation of a webtoon, titled Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid.

Previously, on Friday July 25, 2025, Choi Woo Shik was reported to have received an offer for a new drama, adapted from a popular Naver webtoon. This news was finally confirmed by Choi Woo Shik's agency, FABLE COMPANY, through an official statement.

"Choi Woo Shik has received an offer to star in the Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid and is considering it carefully," explained a representative of the actor's agency.

On Wednesday July 30, 2025, it was Moon Ga Young's turn to reportedly star opposite Choi Woo Shik in the Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid. The actress also gave a similar response through a representative from her agency, PEAK J Entertainment.

Adapted from a webtoon, the Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid tells the love story between Kang Ui Hyeon (played by Choi Woo Shik), a man who dedicates everything to his country and Su A (played by Moon Ga Young), a woman who risks her life to protect Kang Ui Hyeon.

The original webtoon was adapted from the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The webtoon, created by artist Na Yoonhee, also won the Presidential Award at the prestigious Korea Content Awards 2021.

The Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid is set in 1926 during the Japanese occupation of Gyeongseong (the old name of Seoul). Choi Woo Shik will transform into Kang Ui Hyeon, an independence activist fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English.

His character runs a photo studio and possesses special abilities in photography and code-breaking. Kang Ui Hyeon studied law at the University of Tokyo at the behest of his father, a pro-Japanese judge.

However, he was ashamed of his father's behavior and aspired to become a judge to atone for his family's sins. Meanwhile, Moon Ga Young will play Heo Su A, a 17-year-old maid born into a pro-Japanese family.

Su A is illiterate and has never experienced love. Fate robs her of her rights, leading her to suffer and become consumed by a desire for revenge. Many fans are now eagerly anticipating the chemistry between Moon Ga Young and Choi Woo Shik.

The Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid is even more anticipated because it's directed by Heo Jin Ho, the director behind the hits My Mister and When Life Gives You Tangerines.
