The latest Korean drama, 'Queen Mantis', is set to premiere on September 5, 2025, on SBS. This crime thriller is a remake of the French series La Mante. Interestingly, actor Jang Dong Yeon will play the main male character named Cha Soo Yeol, a detective who must deal with his dark past.
In Queen Mantis, Go Hyun Jung plays Jung Yi Shin, a legendary serial killer nicknamed The Mantis. Two decades ago, he brutally murdered five men and was eventually imprisoned. However, a new case emerges when a killer imitates his signature style.
The police then enlist Jung Yi Shin's help in uncovering the truth behind the case. Jang Dong Yeon will play Cha Soo Yeol, Jung Yi Shin's son, who has long been estranged from his mother. His character is described as a detective who has lived with hatred for his own flesh and blood.
"He's someone who lives in denial of his own lineage. He wants to live as if his mother doesn't exist," Jang Dong Yeon said, as quoted by Soompi on Thursday (August 28, 2025). As an actor, Jang Dong Yeon also shared his physical preparation process to get into the skin of this tough detective.
He explained that the makeup team made his appearance look more rugged to fit the drama's genre. He also gained muscle mass. "I put on a little weight. Since I enjoy exercising, the preparation process wasn't too difficult," he said.
Not only that, Jang Dong Yeon also performed many of his own action scenes without a stunt double. The production team revealed that the actor ran tirelessly while chasing the copycat killer and didn't hesitate to perform challenging scenes.
He also commented, “Compared to the action scenes I did in previous projects, the difficulty level of the action scenes in 'Queen Mantis' is not too high, so it is still manageable.” Ahead of the drama's premiere, Jang Dong Yeon shared a special message for viewers.
He said, "The drama 'Queen Mantis,' which was passionately worked on in a positive atmosphere, will soon be released. Please show great interest and love for it. I will continue to repay you with good performances as actor Jang Dong Yoon. Thank you."
